This dataset, spatially represented as polygons, depicts Oakland County's distinguished natural features (legally dedicated Natural Areas and the only National Natural Landmark in the County). Reference information for the feature boundaries came from two hard-copy maps of unknown scale provided by the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Each feature represented was digitized using Oakland County's tax parcels and orthophotography as reference. Key attributes include: Recognition, Name, and DesignationDate.
The purpose of this information is to educate the public about our valuable natural resources, in the hopes of encouraging preservation. It is part of a set of coverages developed for the Historical & Cultural Resources Inventory Mapping Project and can be used for spatial analysis and cartographic output.

The Haven Hill Natural Area feature is recognized as both a legally dedicated natural area and a National Natural Landmark. However, the boundary definition of the area depicted as the Haven Hill State Natural Area is different than that of the National Natural Landmark. Natural Areas may be legally dedicated by State or Federal statute. The criteria to receive this designation includes: areas that have best retained their original landscapes and/or natural communities, such as open dunes, coastal marshes, prairies, savannas, primeval forests or scenic qualities, size and uniqueness. They must also contain ecological, geological, or other features of scientific, scenic or natural history value. These areas are dedicated under Public Act 451 of 1995, Article III Natural Resources Management, Part 351 Wilderness and Natural Areas (previously P.A. 241 of 1972), as either Wilderness, Wild, or Natural Areas. Dedication under the Wilderness and Natural Areas legislation represents the highest form of legal protection under state law for both public and private land in Michigan. To learn more about dedicated natural areas please visit the State of Michigan DNR webpage at: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10367_11854---,00.html The National Natural Landmarks Program recognizes and encourages the conservation of outstanding examples of our country's natural history. It is the only natural areas program of national scope that identifies and recognizes the best examples of biological and geological features in both public and private ownership. National Natural Landmarks are designated by the Secretary of the Interior, with the owner's concurrence. The criteria used for this designation is essentially the same as that for a dedicated natural area, though this designation offers no legal protection. It is possible for a site to be both a Dedicated Natural Area and a National Natural Landmark.

The features represented in this dataset were digitized in ArcGIS 8.x using Oakland County's tax parcel fabric and digital orthophotography as a base. Reference information used to create the legally dedicated natural area features was received from the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and consisted of a hardcopy map of unknown scale. The map depicted each boundary plotted on top of aerial photography. The boundary definition representing the National Natural Landmark was also obtained from a hard-copy map provided by the State of Michigan DNR. This map consisted of a Xerox copy of a 7.5 minute Quadrangle topographic map showing a hand-drawn boundary for the area recognized as the landmark and originated from information provided to the DNR by the National Park Service.
