2008 Generalized Land Use for Southeast Michigan. This land use data was originally created at the parcel level by assigning a land use classification based on parcel property class codes. Manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available, were also used to increase and ensure accuracy. Once generalized land use classifications were assigned to all parcels a DISSOLVE process was utilized based on each parcels LAND_USE and CITY_ID (community code) fields to remove all and any resemblance of the individual parcels (and attributes) that originally created this data. Because this data was created at the parcel level area calculations can be very misleading. For example, a single 10 acre parcel that is comprised of 8 acres of woodlands and 2 acres of a built industrial manufacturing plants would be entirely coded with an Industrial land use classification. NO LAND COVER IS REPRESENTED. The Generalized Land Use Classifications are as follows: Agricultural - Parcels with an agricultural property class - Parcels identified as Agricultural through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. Single-family residential - Parcels with a residential property class. - Parcels that have been identified as Single-family residential through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. Multiple-family residential - Parcels with a residential or commercial property class representing apartments. - Parcels that have been identified as Multiple-family residential through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. Commercial - Parcels with a commercial property class - Parcels identified as Commercial through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. Industrial - Parcels with an industrial property class - Parcels identified as Industrial through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. Governmental / institutional - Parcels with an exempt property class identified as governmental or institutional through queries of ownership information. - Parcels identified as Governmental / institutional through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. Park, recreation, and open space - Parcels identified as Park, recreation, and open space through queries of ownership information as well as through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. - Golf courses are included within Park, recreation, and open space and not within the Commercial class. Airport - Parcels identified as airports or "air fields" through queries of ownership information as well as through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. Transportation, communication, utility (TCU) - Parcels with a TCU property class - Parcels identified as TCU through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available, along with queries of ownership information. Water - Parcels identified as Water through manual inspections against aerial imagery from 2005 and 2008, where available. - The original parcel based data was UNIONED with a SEMCOG lake layer and the resulting parcels (polygons) were coded appropriately.
SEMCOG's 2008 Land Use data provides an objective picture of what land use exists within the SEMCOG region. The availability of this data allows SEMCOG and other agencies to monitor land use changes, analyze trends, and formulate plans for infrastructure designed to service residential areas and activity centers.
